Signs of the Seasons

Today I got an e-mail that pretty much symbolizes that class is close to being back in session. It was from WKU AD of communication, Todd Stewart asking which reporters would be attending WKU Football Media day in August.

As the summer draws to a close it's time to start really looking hard at the upcoming school year. There are plenty of good potential storylines to follow as we begin the fall seasons.

Football: Year two of the transition, a more difficult schedule. Plenty will come with this.

Volleyball: How the team build's off their at-large NCAA Tournament appearance after losing only one senior.

Women's Soccer: Had a successful '07 campaign. How do they respond this year?

Possibly ESPY?

Ty Rogers has been nominated for "Best Finish" in this year's ESPY awards.

The shot is one of four nominees in the Best Finish category. Other candidates for the award are the final lap of 2007 Pepsi 400, the overtime periods of game one of this spring’s Western Conference first-round NBA playoff series between the San Antonio Spurs and Phoenix Suns, and the end of the Pittsburgh Penguins’ triple-overtime victory over the Detroit Red Wings in game five of the NHL’s Stanley Cup finals last month.

I like Rogers' odds. Hopefully he gets to attend the ESPYs with his Dad. While it was remarkable at the time what he and the team had accomplished, what is even more remarkable is the constant attention it continues to get, and it was 5.7 seconds that did all this.

Incredible.

No doubt Rogers' shot is the best finish I've seen in person in my life. I'm saying that even after being at the infamous "Flea-Kicker" in 1997 when Matt Davidson caught the ball after it had been kicked for Nebraska to send the game into overtime with Missouri and then eventually go onto win the National Championship.

Welcome aboard and a few thoughts

This is just a start, but this will be a place where I can discuss what is happening around WKU Sports and the College Heights Herald. This may just be temporary as when we get back to school the higher-ups may move me to a different spot, but for now we'll start here and go from there.

I'll try to keep this updated nearly daily with interesting things that's happening not only on campus but in the college sports world. I'll provide links, analysis and plenty of other information including a peek into my brain and what it takes to put the Sports section together at the Herald.

I really don't think there could be a better time to follow the Toppers not only as a reporter but also as a fan. Four of the school's most notable teams made the NCAA Tournament, including men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and baseball. All four appearances are just what Athletic Director Wood Selig and WKU President Gary Ransdell want as they move the football team to the Football Championship Subdivision.

As for a few happenings around the hill.

Michael Grant from the Louisville Courier-Journal reported the other day that the cost to renovate Houchens Industries-L.T. Smith Stadium by nearly 11 million dollars. We'll take a look at this as the season draws closer at what the stadium renovation does for the good of the program.

And also this from BG....Wood Selig extended head volleyball coach, Travis Hudson's contract through 2016 with a seven-year extension. Hudson is perhaps the most successful coach at Western Kentucky as he leads his team to the top of the Sun Belt nearly every season. The Hudson story is a very interesting one, while male coaches in volleyball are common, Hudson has no playing experience and was hired as a 24 year-old head coach by Wood Selig after Hudson graduated from Western.

I really like this move by Selig to nail Hudson down for nearly another decade at Western. The Sun Belt is getting stronger in volleyball slowly but surely and the women on the team seem to have a lot of respect for him.
